In the world of professional golf, comebacks often make for compelling stories. No we aren’t talking about Anthony Kim. We are talking about Angel Cabrera who makes his first return to tournament golf this weekend on the PGA Tour of Champions, since being released from prison. Cabrera, who served 30 months in prison in Brazil and Argentina and last played PGA Tour Champions in 2020, is set to make his return to that circuit at the Trophy Hassan II, Feb. 22-24 at Royal Golf Dar Es Salam in Rabat, Morocco.
Angel Cabrera’s Return to the Fairways
Angel Cabrera, the Argentine golfer known for his powerful swing and clutch performances, has made headlines not for his victories but for his tumultuous personal life. After a successful career that included wins at the Masters and the U.S. Open, Cabrera’s life took a dark turn as he faced legal troubles and ultimately served time in prison for charges including assault and theft.
However, Cabrera’s love for the game never waned, and upon his release from prison, he set his sights on a return to professional golf. His first tournament back since his release garnered little fanfare compared to his past triumphs, yet it marked a significant milestone in his journey of redemption. Despite the lack of attention, Cabrera’s presence on the course serves as a reminder of the resilience of the human spirit and the power of second chances.
The story of Anthony Kim is pretty cool as well and we are huge Kim fans. But I think spending 30 months in prison and getting back on tour versus an injury, albeit a 12 year hiatus, is going to take the cake here. At least in my opinion is the crazy story of the two. It will be interesting to see who has the better weekend, Kim or Cabrera.
